The winter months can wreak havoc when it comes to rosacea flares. The frigid temperatures, dry air and strong, harsh winds rob skin of its natural lipid layer, which keeps the skin from drying out. The dry air from furnaces and other heating sources also suck the moisture out of skin.

Here are some tips to keep your skin calm and hydrated through the punishing months of winter:

Use luke warm water, not hot.
Hot water robs skin of moisture causing dry skin, so it's best to shower in lukewarm water.

Moisturize directly after bathing
Use a face moisturizer that caters to your particular skin type, Dry or Oily. Click here for some excellent choices in rosacea sensitive moisturizers

Consider a humidifier in you home or office
Winter heaters and furnaces can rob our skin of natural moisture. A humidifier is a good way to balance it out

Use a Sensitive Skin Cleanser that won’t try out your face
Avoid alcohol, sulfates, dyes and perfume. Click here for an excellent dry skin Cleanser.

Use a Hydrating Mask of some sort regularly. The Green Tea Hydratingsoft gel mask is one of the best. Because of its occlusive      properties (the ability to lock in moisture), this reusable mask has the ability to deliver hydration and nutrients to  the skin like no other.  You can use this mask up to 12 times.

Stay hydrated by balancing your water intake throughout the day
Guzzling water can be counter productive, but 4 oz every couple of hours provides the body and the dermis with a steady flow of hydration.

Considered using bottled water to rinse your face
Harsh minerals in our water can be very drying especially for rosacea sensitive skin

Consider healthy oil supplements like fish oil or other Omega 3 oils
New studies show omega-3 fish oil pills may soothe super dry skin. Patients, who took fish oils pills in a study reported in Allure magazine, saw significant results within a few weeks.

You must wear Sunscreen all the time, especially in the winter. It is important for blocking ultraviolet light, which can disrupt ceramide levels in the skin. Use it even in winter to keep yourself moisturized.  Total Care SunBlock50

More Skin Tips with an Anti-Aging Kicker:

We often use the expression “skin deep” to say something is a bit shallow, but in reality your skin is your body’s largest organ – which means taking care of it, whether you have rosacea or not, is essential for true head-to-toe health.

Look for those Orange Fruits

Crave a tan, but know it's bad for the skin? You're not alone.  Who doesn't like a little color when they're feeling pale?  Here's an interesting tip:  Skip the sun and reach for dark orange-hued fruits and veggies such as apricots, cantaloupe, sweet potatoes and butternut squash instead. Not only are they filled with the antioxidant superstar beta carotene, but a 2011 study found consuming several servings of brightly colored produce (surprisingly, beta carotene is also found in dark leafy greens like kale, spinach and chard) enhanced subjects’ natural glow and gave them the appearance of a warmer skin tone. Bonus points: these foods are rich in vitamin C, one of your skin’s main water-soluble antioxidants

Feed your skin well by including salmon, sardines, flax, canola oil, walnuts or fortified eggs on your plate each week. These skin super foods are rich in omega-3 fats, a group of essential fatty acids that your body can’t make on its own, but which are the secret to helping skin stay noticeably more elastic, supple and radiant. Here’s how: omega-3 fats help provide a protective barrier to cells, enabling them to hold more water. They keep skin cell membranes healthy and supple enough to enable nutrients to get in and waste to be removed. They also to play a role in suppressing the body’s production of pro-inflammatory compounds, which can accelerate skin aging.

While you can’t stop the clock on aging altogether, you can slow it down considerably at your skin’s cellular level.  And it may surprise you to discover that to do just that, you should spend as much time in the grocery store as in the beauty aisle for optimal results. Victoria, left, a former model shares her tips for keeping her skin soft and supple at 61!

"My three pillars for healthy, youthful skin are Sleep, Water and Protect from the Sun.  As a youth I was a 'sun junkie' and loved lying out in the sun for hours to get that great tan.   Later, when I was in my late 30's, it took two rounds of skin cancer on my face for me to realize the damage I was doing to my skin. From that time on, I never left the house without spf50 on my face."

Sleep rejuvenates your skin and everything else. "It may be hard to get that full 8 hours of sleep with our hectic schedules, but overall, a good night's sleep can add years to our lives and vitality to our skin."

Water, water, water.  Your skin is about 70% water.  Vicki sums up our skin's need for water:  "Have you ever seen a flower that hasn't been watered?  It droops and eventually shrivels.  Think of your skin like the pedals of a flower.  Water yourself daily to keep your face soft and supple."

Sorry Smokers, your skin doesn't like your habit.  "Cigarette smoke and alcohol accelerate skin’s aging.   My mother didn't drink, but she was a dedicated two-pack-a-day smoker from the age of 15.   Her heyday was the 1940's when everyone smoked because it was cool and sexy.   By the time she reached her fifties, the effects of daily smoking were all over her face.  Smoke clogs the pores, and over time, results in excessive fine lines and discoloration of the skin."
